What is Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation(MIDC)?

Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is an autonomous statutory body set up by the Government of Meghalaya to promote industrial development in Meghalaya. MIDC’s mandate is to encourage and facilitate industrial growth in Meghalaya through the promotion of investment, development of infrastructure, facilitation of trade, and establishment of market linkages. Meghalaya has a long international boundary of 443 kms with Bangladesh.

The Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) was constituted on 6th April 1971 with the objective to promote industrial development in the State of Meghalaya. The corporation is a statutory body under the Ministry of Industry and Employment. The Corporation implements a number of industrialization programs such as setting up of industry clusters, the establishment of industrial estates, incentivizing export-oriented industries, etc. MIDC spreads its wings across 12 towns in Meghalaya. It has set up 8 industrial estates in Meghalaya.

Functions of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation

The Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) was incorporated with the primary objective of promoting industrial development in the state. MIDC is a statutory body under the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Meghalaya. The corporation has a Board of Directors composed of eminent persons from industry and commerce. MIDC’s jurisdiction covers all industrial estates in the state. It also deals with land registration, allotment, and alienation, business promotion measures, cooperation with foreign investors, development finance institutions, etc.

Projects undertaken by MIDC Meghalaya

MIDC Meghalaya Ltd was incorporated in 1971 as a Public Sector Undertaking with the objective of generating employment and promoting industrial development in the state of Meghalaya. The Corporation has so far undertaken various Projects across the State including; the setting up of an Industrial Park at Tura in the West Khasi Hills district, the construction of a Power Plant at Hnahthial in East Khasi Hills district, the establishment of industries in Silchar and Jowai districts, setting up of an IT Park at Shillong and establishment of a Leather Research Institute in Garo Hills. The Corporation is also actively involved in partnering with other PSUs and Private Sector to promote industrialization in the state.

Industries in Meghalaya

Industries in Meghalaya are mainly plantation and agriculture-based, mineral industry. Some of the major industries in the state are engineering, dairy, textiles, food processing, leather, and handloom sectors. There is also a significant presence of small-scale industries such as handicrafts and cottage industries. Types of Industry that can be ideally formed in the state are Mineral based Industry, Horticulture and Agro-Based Industry, Electronics and Information Technology, Export Oriented Units, Tourism

The state has the potential to develop its industrial sector with support from the government. The primary objectives of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) are to create quality jobs for locals and promote investment in high-tech enterprises. The corporation has signed agreements with various companies to set up Industries in Meghalaya.

Industrial Area Developed by MIDC Meghalaya

The Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) was set up in 1971 with the objective to foster industrial development in the State. MIDC is a statutory body and is headquartered in Shillong.

MIDC has developed over 150 industries in the State, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of Meghalaya. The major industries promoted by MIDC are the manufacturing of textiles, garments, leather goods, carpets, and other textile products, pharmaceuticals and allied industries, food processing, iron and steel production, information technology, tourism, etc.
